CHIN REDUCTION SURGERY

A chin reduction surgery can be performed through a vertical or horizontal excess. Although most chin reduction surgeries can be performed from the inside of the mouth, sometimes a small incision below the chin (submental incision), or a small incision at the lower jaw line will be necessary. The excess bone will be removed and the osteotomies will be stabilized with mini-plates. Prior to your procedure X-rays and/or a facial CT-scan (bone windows) will be needed to assess your anatomy, alveolar nerve and dental roots. A thorough pre-operative assessment will allow for the planning of a safe and accurate chin surgery.

CHIN AUGMENTATION SURGERY

Chin augmentation can be either achieved by advancing your chin bone, or by inserting a chin implant. If chin advancement, i.e. sliding genioplasty, is performed, no implant will be used. The chin bone will be divided, moved forward, and secured with mini-plates, from the inside your mouth (most of the time). The advantage of a sliding genioplasty is that no foreign material is needed carrying the risk of infection due to intraoral bacteria. Patients who wish to undergo a less traumatic surgery, with a shorter down time, often prefer a chin augmentation either using silicone implants or implants made of a porous material allowing a better integration by your lower jaw bone. With an implant the shape of a chin cannot only be augmented but also altered to a certain degree. One of the down sides of chin implants are, that there is a risk of infection which in some cases, requires the removal of the chin implant.

CHIN CONTOURING SURGERY

Patients seeking more subtle changes regarding their chin contour, might be an excellent candidate for a chin contouring procedure. A chin contouring procedure will reduce from an intraoral approach a prominent, or pointy chin by shaving the bony contour. Chin contouring surgery is less invasive than a chin reduction procedure not requiring any osteotomies.
