Why travel to Rhodes for surgery
Traveling for an aesthetic operation is a very common thing these days. People choose to have an operation not for just a better price but also because they don’t want friends and relatives to know about it, because they can combine it with relaxing holidays and often because they can ask for a specialized treatment.
Treatment abroad quite often receives bad publicity and there always rumors of “botched” patients. These stories never look the important details. Everywhere around the world ,even in your country ,there will be surgeons willing to operate beyond the rules of science.
They will operate on patients that are not proper candidates for the procedure (ex an obese patient to have liposuction) or they may offer “wrong” “easier” “cheaper” procedure (ex breast augmentation instead of a breast lift in a multiparty woman). Of course when that’s the case patients won’t be happy or even worse have complications. Unfortunately cosmetic surgery is considered “easy money” for lots of poorly or self trained “cosmetic doctors” so be careful. Credential checking is easy these days and is something that you should do.
I am a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Greece since 2003 . I am enlisted in the Specialist Register with GMC (General Medical Council) in UK. I am member of ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) and often I lecture on ISAPS educational congresses on body contouring. You can have a look at my detailed CV by following this link…
I always believed that surgeons should offer surgery that they feel they can provide the best results for their patients. So that’s why my focus is on body contouring. You can learn more for my philosophy and the way I approach Plastic Surgery by following this link…
People that look for surgery abroad usually worry for two things. Price and Safety. Their both legitimate worries so let me try to answer both.
So first question is why the is the price cheaper that the one in their own country? Is there a compromise in quality of the service provided? There may been some offerings I am afraid but I can only speak for my self, so let me explain why I can offer a better price without compromising quality.
We live in different countries so our insurance and tax system is different. In some countries insurance cover for your doctor can have a huge impact on the price you have. Taxes are also an added value to your price. The labor cost and living cost in Rhodes is far less that most European countries. Here in Rhodes nobody is in need of a house with pool, we have plenty of great beaches to swim and we don’t need a Porsche to drive around, so I actually don’t need to overcharge patients.
But what about safety? When it comes to that issue there two sub entities to worry about. First are the actual operation details and second the famous “what if” complications occur.
Where does the surgeon operate, what regulations one follows and whether there is use of quality products.I operate in Euromedica Rhodes Clinic which is a clinic build on 2007 under the new European Union directives. Its fully operational since with brand new equipment. It offers all levels of care, it has an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and all doctors working here are board certified. We only use products that regulate under the laws of European Union.
I will give you an example. In all breast augmentations I use Allergan or Mentor implants which are USA products that have FDA approval. I never used PIP implants as many “cheap” UK clinics have (there are about 15000 British women with PIP implants that need exchange). For my body contouring procedures I use Vaser (3rd generation ultrasound device) also FDA approved.
Patients will always worry for complications. Let me reveal a little secret. We doctors worry as well. If a surgeon says in a meeting that “I don’t have any complications”, the audience underneath will first laugh and make fun of him. Why? Because on every surgery there is possibility for complications no matter what we do to avoid them. I tell you a little story from my personal experience. Once there was a couple in my office to discuss about breast augmentation.
The husband was an airplane pilot. He asked me really concerned : “can you guarantee that everything will be fine with the operation?” I answered “if I get on the plane you drive, can you guarantee that the ride is going to be smooth?” Its very rare for planes to crush but occasionally they do. The same goes for surgery. Complications are rare and can happen on every surgeon. By following certain guidelines like choosing the right operation for the right patient and other
Complications are rare. Complications may be early or late. The recommended duration of stay for medical tourists will allow early complications to be managed. Following your return home, you can maintain email or Skype contact with me. Patients frequently simply require reassurance and while there is no substitute for a live consultation, because of the visual nature of plastic surgery, most of the problems are easily solved.
With my self being a member of ISAPS it means that for every patient that travels from abroad there is an insurance that I purchase on your behalf to ensure that any complication you may experience after your return home will be treated by an ISAPS member in your country at no cost. But remember, complications after you return home are very rare.
How well can cosmetic surgery be combined with a holiday?. Following surgery you will need rest and recovery. Sometimes recuperation and resting away from home can relieve the pressure of dealing with your normal life’s demands. If your idea of a holiday is to lie around reading books, then recuperation can satisfy that. But if I claim that after an abdominoplasty or a Vaser 4D liposuction you will be touring around the island or enjoy the blue sea i would definitely lie.
After surgery check ups will need to be done. Towards the end of your stay you will be able to see some sights and have a gentle holiday, but do not plan on being too active. I recommend having your surgery at the beginning of your stay to allow you to have the maximum amount of time close to me in Rhodes.
